The Superior Court of Alameda County (Court) announced today that it is implementing further measured efforts to restore in-person services to the public, effective the week of May 3, 2021.

At the Rene C. Davidson Courthouse (RCD), located at 1225 Fallon Street in Oakland, the Appeals office in Room G-4 (lower level) will be open daily for appellate filings from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., beginning Monday, May 3, 2021. To facilitate timely processing, this in-person opportunity means the Court will no longer accept appellate filings made via the RCD dropbox, although parties may still submit appellate filings via U.S. mail, fax filing (for civil), and e-filing (for criminal). Parties that have an Order for the return of evidence or exhibits must call 510-891-6001 to schedule an appointment for the ordered return.

Drop boxes at RCD and other court locations will continue to be available for other (non-appellate) filings. Regarding restraining orders, please note that restraining order petitions that are placed in drop boxes before 3:00 p.m. will be decided the same day, while those deposited after 3:00 p.m. will be decided on the next business day.

At the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse (WWM), located at 661 Washington Street in Oakland, Department 103 will be open Monday through Wednesday for both in-person (for out-of-custody defendants) and remote North County felony pretrial hearings and dispositions, beginning Monday, May 3, 2021. (Remote appearance informal pretrial calendars will continue to be held on Thursdays.) Unless ordered otherwise, defendants are encouraged to appear remotely via BlueJeans or through counsel pursuant to Penal Code section 977. To comply with ongoing social distancing requirements, a maximum of 15 persons will be permitted in the courtroom at any one time; additional persons will be spaced outside the courtroom and in the lobby at 6-foot intervals.

In addition, starting Thursday, May 6, 2021, the Court will reopen two Traffic windows to the public at WWM. These clerk’s office windows will be open weekly on Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., to coincide with in-person Traffic court. The number of persons present for court appearances and clerks’ assistance will be monitored, and persons may be asked to wait outside the courthouse until there is sufficient space inside.

Finally, the Court’s Self-Help Center, which remains closed for walk-in service, will adopt new hours beginning May 3, 2021. Telephone assistance will be available Monday through Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., while LiveChat assistance will be available Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

All visitors to the Court must comply with face-covering guidelines and will be subject to health screening protocols. The Court will continue to carefully and thoughtfully restore additional in-person services as resources permit and in compliance with relevant local public health and state guidance.
