The Court orders continuances on many Court hearings in an effort to reduce the number of persons entering the Courthouses

SAN JOSÉ, California (March 13, 2020): At the direction of Presiding Judge Deborah A. Ryan and for the health and safety of all users of the Court, effective March 16 through April 5, 2020, the following matters will be rescheduled in the Santa Clara County Superior Court:

  • Civil and Probate Jury and Court Trials, except for ongoing trials
  • Small Claims Motions, Trials and Appeals
  • Most Traffic Matters, except for trials
  • Many Family Hearings
  • Most Guardianship and Adoption Proceedings
  • Many Criminal Trials
  • Unlawful Detainer Matters

Traffic Court users who want to set a court date by phone (for most hearings, except for trials) may do so by calling: 408-556-3000 (press 1, then 5, then 8).

These continuances are intended to reduce the number of employees, jurors, parties and attorneys in the Court, consistent with Governor Gavin Newsom’s Executive Order dated March 12, 2020 and guidelines issued in the Order from the Santa Clara County Public Health Officer dated March 13, 2020, relating to COVID-19.

Parties and counsel attending other civil proceedings are encouraged to make arrangements with CourtCall (1-888-88-COURT) to appear telephonically, as permitted by law under California Rules of Court, rule 3.670.

Although Court proceedings are an essential service of government, the Court has decided to limit the number of non-mandatory proceedings for this time in an effort to minimize the risk to all court users, court staff, and judicial officers.
