LASC: SUPERIOR COURT OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY SEEKS QUALIFIED APPLICANTS FOR COURT COMMISSIONER
The Court Is Accepting Applications Now Through July 15. Interested Attorneys Are Invited To Attend an Information Session on Monday, June 16
The Superior Court of Los Angeles County is seeking highly qualified, motivated, and accomplished individuals who are committed to upholding the law and adjudicating cases fairly and effectively to fill the position of court commissioner. The ideal candidate will possess strong legal and writing skills, a high level of personal integrity, good judgment, decisiveness, patience, intelligence and exemplary people skills.
About the Position:
Court commissioners conduct hearings and adjudicate cases in various areas, including civil, criminal, family law, juvenile, probate, small claims and traffic matters. They manage heavy dockets, call calendar matters, hear testimony, rule on objections, admit evidence and issue rulings. With the agreement of the parties involved, court commissioners may also sit as temporary judges. Court commissioners may be assigned to any of the Court’s 36 courthouses located across Los Angeles County. Applicants should note that the assignments and court locations for commissioners are based on the needs of the Court, regardless of the applicant’s experience as an attorney and the location of their place of residence. Additionally, court commissioners are required by law to work in a courthouse and cannot work remotely.
Court commissioners hold an at-will position, serving at the pleasure of the Court and are not subject to any vested terms of service. They work under the authority of the Court’s judges and are subject to the direction of the Presiding Judge and their designees. While employed by the Court, commissioners are prohibited from practicing law.
The annual salary for a court commissioner is $208,017.84, along with a generous benefits package through the Los Angeles County MegaFlex program.

Selection Requirements:
Candidates for the position of court commissioner must be active members in good standing of the State Bar of California with a minimum of ten years of legal practice experience in California. They must be residents of California and United States citizens.
Selection Procedure:
Pursuant to Local Rule 1.9 of the Superior Court of Los Angeles County, the Court Commissioner Section Committee (Committee) is responsible for selecting court commissioners. Teams composed of two Committee members will conduct virtual interviews with a specified number of the most qualified applicants. After these interviews, the Committee will invite the candidates it considers most qualified for in-person interviews with the entire Committee. The names of the highest-ranking candidates will then be placed on an eligibility list ranked in order.
As the Court fills vacant court commissioner positions, it will distribute a ballot to its judges containing the names of the candidates listed in order of rank, along with each candidate’s photograph and biographical statement. Judges will be asked to vote for a candidate to fill the vacancy or vacancies. It is important to note that every elected court commissioner must undergo a criminal background investigation before being appointed.
Prohibition Against Soliciting Support for Candidacy:
The Superior Court has a policy that prohibits court commissioner applicants from soliciting support from judges for their candidacy. Maintaining the integrity of the recruitment process for the court commissioner position is vital to the Court. All candidates must adhere to this policy and refrain from soliciting support from judges.
Despite this prohibition, applicants are allowed to list up to four judges who are familiar with their work as references.
