Superior Court of Los Angeles County’s Probate Division Announces New Case Subtypes for Guardianship Cases
Effective Feb. 2, 2026, the Superior Court of Los Angeles County’s Probate Division introduced four new case subtypes to streamline the guardianship filing process. Attorneys and self-represented litigants are now asked to specify a subtype for all new filings that initiate probate guardianship in order to clarify the relationship between the parties and the age of the individual involved.
The four new subtypes are:
- Non-Relative to Adult 18 to Under 21
- Non-Relative to Minor Under 18
- Relative to Adult 18 to Under 21
- Relative to Minor Under 18
When initiating a new guardianship case through electronic filing, parties should select the appropriate subtype under “Case Information.” Relevant guidance for these categories can be found in the following form sections:
- Form GC-210P (Petition for Appointment of Guardian of the Person): Sections 5 and 8.
- Form GC-210 (Petition for Appointment of Guardian of Minor): Sections 2, 3, and 4.
