Superior Court of Los Angeles County Expands Remote American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting for Jurors Following Successful Pilot at Pomona Courthouse South

The Superior Court of Los Angeles County will expand its Remote American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting for Jurors initiative, following the successful completion of a pilot project conducted at the Pomona Courthouse South in July 2025, Presiding Judge Sergio C. Tapia II announced today. The initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Court’s Language Access Services Unit, the Juror Services Unit, and the Enterprise Project Management Office (EPMO), which oversaw the pilot.

“Expanding access to remote American Sign Language interpreter services for jurors is a meaningful step forward in our commitment to accessibility and inclusion,” Presiding Judge Tapia said. “Jury service lies at the very heart of our democracy, and every person—regardless of disability—deserves a fair, equal, and meaningful opportunity to serve. By increasing access to ASL interpretation, we are dismantling long-standing barriers to participation and ensuring that deaf and hard-of-hearing jurors can fully engage in the judicial process alongside their peers. This initiative reflects the Court’s broader dedication to meeting people where they are and removing obstacles to equal justice.”

This enhanced ASL interpreting process is designed to ensure that deaf and hard of hearing jurors can fully participate in the judicial process. By offering remote ASL interpreter services as an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodation during voir dire and jury trials, the Court is strengthening its commitment to fair and equal access to justice.

To support this effort, mobile carts equipped with video technology and panoramic cameras will be deployed to courtrooms as needed. With a full panoramic view of the courtroom and jury deliberation table, the cameras enable remote interpreters to see and hear all participants clearly. The mobile carts and cameras will be available on demand to support remote ASL interpretation throughout the Court.

As the new technology is installed court wide, courtroom staff will receive the necessary training to operate the equipment and ensure its effective implementation.

The largest trial court in the nation, the Superior Court of Los Angeles County serves a population of almost 10 million in 36 courthouses with a jurisdiction covering over 4,000 square miles that includes 88 cities, 140 unincorporated areas and dozens of law enforcement agencies. The Court is steadfast in its mission to serve our community by providing equal access to justice through the fair, timely and effective resolution of all cases.
