Court Notice

CIVIL LAW DIVISION ANNOUNCES CHANGES TO JUDICIAL OFFICER ASSIGNMENT AND LOCATION

By order of the Presiding Judge, in accordance with the authority vested in the Presiding Judge under Rule 10.603 of the California Rules of Court, the Civil Law Division will implement the following change in judicial officer assignment and courtroom assignment.

  • Effective March 20, 2023, the Honorable Judge T. Mark Smith has been assigned to Courtroom T-2 at the Metropolitan Division, Traffic Department, located at 3131 Arrow Street, Bakersfield, CA 93308. A civil caseload is being assigned to Judge Smith, in addition to unlimited civil cases currently assigned to other judicial officers that are being reassigned to Judge Smith. The assignment and reassignment to Judge Smith are for all purposes. For the list of cases reassigned, please see the list on the Court’s website under News, Updates, & Notices. During this transitional period, all counsel and parties in unlimited civil cases should periodically conduct case searches on the Court’s non-criminal case search portal by clicking here to determine whether their case(s) have been reassigned.

All matters currently calendared before another judge shall remain scheduled on the dates and times previously set until April 17, 2023. For cases assigned to Judge Smith, counsel and self-represented parties are instructed to include Judge Smith’s initials (TMS) and his courtroom (T-2) on the first page of all documents submitted to the court for filing.

Peremptory challenges under Civil Code of Procedure §170.6 must be filed within fifteen days of the parties’ first appearance before Judge Smith.
